Phil Scott reelected

Vermont’s Republican Gov. Phil Scott won reelection to a sixth term on Tuesday, defeating Democrat and Progressive Amanda Janoo in a race that proved more competitive than most voters would have imagined when Scott announced he would run again.

Janoo, an economist from Burlington running her first-ever political campaign, conceded in a speech at her campaign’s election night party in Burlington around 10:50 p.m.

The Associated Press had not yet called the race for Scott at that point.

Molly Gray elected as Vermont’s next lieutenant governor

Democrat Molly Gray is getting her old job back and will become Vermont’s next lieutenant governor.

Lt. Gov. John Rodgers, a Republican, conceded the race around 9:30 p.m.

“The voters of Vermont have made their decision, and while this isn’t the outcome we had hoped for, I respect their choice and congratulate Molly Gray on a hard-fought campaign,” Rodgers said in a statement. “Serving as your Lieutenant Governor has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”

As of 9:30 p.m., Gray had received 62.4% of the votes cast to Rodgers’s 37.4%.

Democrats pick up Statehouse seats in early results

Though most closely watched legislative races weren’t called as of 9 p.m., Vermont Democrats had picked up some seats in the Legislature.

Kim Gleason, the Democratic challenger to Sen. Pat Brennan, R-Grand Isle, pulled off Tuesday evening’s first Senate district flip. Brennan won the seat in 2024 from Democrat Andy Julow, who was appointed to fill the seat after the death of veteran Sen. Dick Mazza. Gleason was previously vice chair of the Vermont Pension Investment Commission and served on the state’s school redistricting task force.

Democrat Jeff Haylon beat out Republican Aida Nielsen for the Rutland-9 House seat Tuesday evening, flipping the seat being vacated by Nielsen’s husband, Rep. Todd Nielsen, R-Brandon. The Associated Press called the race at roughly 8 p.m., with Haylon showing a lead of more than 20 points.

And Phoebe Tucker, a Democrat, ousted Rep. Kevin Winter, R-Ludlow, in the race for the Rutland-Windsor House seat Tuesday evening. Winter first won the seat in 2024. The Associated Press called that race at roughly 9 p.m., with Tucker leading by more than 12 points.

Balint victory

U.S. Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt., cruised to reelection Tuesday night, with the Associated Press calling the race before 8 p.m.

The two-term representative from Brattleboro defeated Republican Gerald Malloy, who was seeking congressional office for a third time. Balint, who previously led the Vermont Senate, is among the strongest critics of President Trump in the U.S. House.

Top of mind for many voters is the race for governor between incumbent Republican Phil Scott and Democrat/Progressive Amanda Janoo. The race has shaped up to be far closer than most political observers expected between Scott, who is seeking his sixth term, and Janoo, an economist from Burlington running her first-ever campaign.
